Greek Salad
Greek Salad or Horiatiki Salad (translated also as "village, rustic, or summer salad") is a popular salad in Greek Cuisine.
Made with pieces of tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, onion, feta cheese which is usually served as a slice on top of the other ingredients, and typicaly Kalamata Oilves. Typical seasoning is salt and mountain Oregano and dressed with Olive oil (though I like the balsamic vinegar kick!).
Often this salad is thought of as a farmer's breakfast or lunch, as it is the ingredients that a Greek Farmer would have on hand. Many variations and additional ingredients are often found outside Greece.
I crumbled the feta on top of the salad and didn't use as much onion as the recipe called for. Serve this salad with grilled flat bread and it is perfect.
The only thing I was determined to do after having had several traditional Greek salads while in Greece was to recreate it. It is absolutely delicious any way you decide to make it.
Though Greeks will never mix green salad with tomatoes, could add 1 head lettuce, torn into bite-size pieces (I use romaine).
